Or Tor Kor is the fresh market Bangkok recommends to itself. It sits at the north-western edge of Saphan Kwai (สะพานควาย), one block from Chatuchak Weekend Market and almost nothing like it: a daily, covered, produce-first market with a national reputation for quality, aimed at people buying food to cook. What it actually is
Or Tor Kor — ตลาด อ.ต.ก. — is run by the Marketing Organisation for Farmers, and that origin explains the character of it. It is a graded, curated produce market rather than a general bazaar: fruit sorted and priced by quality, seafood on ice, meat cut to order, a large prepared-food section, and a dried-goods hall. It is covered, parts of it are air-conditioned, and it is clean in a way that fresh markets in this city often are not.
It also trades every day, which is the practical difference that catches people out. Chatuchak, one block north, is a weekend event. Or Tor Kor is a Tuesday-morning market that happens to be famous.
